Welcome! This portion of the Short-Track Racers on the Internet site attempts to cover the huge variety of cars racing on dirt and asphalt short tracks known as Modifieds. Mods run the gamut from mostly stock, low-cost cars to the extremely fast winged supermodifieds. Major sanctions include IMCA, UMP, DIRT, ISMA, NASCAR, USMS and at least 20 others.
Check out our Modified Photos database. From this page, you can search for all kinds of Modified and Super Modified racing subjects -- from victory lane shots to crashes, we have a rapidly growing library of captioned photos.
Modifieds run on both dirt and asphalt with only a change of tires and springs -- and sometimes not even that. The best way to recognize them is by the open wheel front-end (usually) and the stock-looking (mostly) rear end. There are a wide variety of mods running around. The ISMA Super Mods are winged sprint-like speedsters with the engine hanging behind the left front tire. NASCAR Tour Mods are more traditional but very light weight, and the IMCA Mods are everywhere in the US and Canada and fairly inexpensive to run. Our Tech pages outline the technical differences between some of the various types of mods and their sanction rules.
Traditionally, mod teams are very lean and mean. There are a zillion cars and not enough sponsors so they tend to not waste a nickel. Also, the touring series are limited in number and payout, so few mod drivers become well-known nationally. The Drivers & Teams pages introduces some drivers and points to the web sites of any who are on the 'net.
